Ivoiry coast

Abidjan’s top startup Airshop is a platform that enables people to order items online and pick them up at duty-free shops when they travel. In turn, customers can save an estimated 20% off their purchases, while the firms can get better visibility and sell more of their products, making it a “win-win” situation all around for the actors involved.

Principle and genesis of the offer

The size of the market Airshop evolves in represents today 60 billion euros, and it is expected to reach 100 billion by 2020. Last year, its growth reached 10%, a real trend that is here to stay.
Indeed, Airshop is before everything an economic model that is based on receiving commissions after each sale. Every time a passenger buys a product on the platform, without having to pay any additional fee, Airshop gets a small percentage of the successful transaction in a market in growth. This is profitable for the Duty Free shops as well because they can sell some of their rarest products and make more profit.

Hence, Airshop wants to unleash the untapped potential of duty-free stores by enabling passengers to make special orders of high value products in advance, thus saving a substantial amount of money while increasing the revenue for the stores. Today people mainly buy, alcohol, tobacco and cosmetics in duty-free stores, so the objective of Airshop is to offer them a diverse panel of products accessible in an easy and efficient manner. And since there are not many firms in this market in comparison with the rest of the world, Airshop can reinforce its position in West Africa and the world, as its goal is to attract 0,5% of worldwide potential customers.

Customer Care

The concept behind Airshop is quite straightforward. As described on its website, it strongly relies on three pillars. First of all, connecting users with Duty free shops, and thus be able to discover available products around the airport or make special requests. Second of all, ensure a safe way to pay online for every product, by preordering after looking at the app catalog. Then the final step is to pick up the bought products at the Duty Free Shop, you can thus pick up your order at the store on your travel day and save 20%.

What is an innovation

Airshop was recently named winner of the Ivory Coast-based leg of global startup pitching competition Seedstars World, and advanced to compete against other regional winners at the global finals that was held in Switzerland in February 2016. It received this prize after the judge realized how Airshop managed to address a global issue by giving it a local twist, meaning that they have succeeded in adapting this need in an innovative fashion to correspond to the local African market.
Airshop offers a solution that helps the customer save time and money when shopping for the latest products. For the Duty Freeshops, Airshop offers much more flexibility than the usual route provides, as they can present cheaper products but make more money off of it.
